Palafoxia arida, also known as desert palafox or Spanish needle, is a species of flowering plant in the aster family. It is native to the Mojave Desert and Sonoran Desert regions of California, the Southwestern United States, and northwestern Mexico. This annual herb has an erect, branching stem and rough-haired, linear or lance-shaped leaves. Its inflorescence consists of up to 40 flower heads with pink or white tubular disc florets. The fruit is an achene with a pappus. There are two varieties of Palafoxia arida, including the larger Palafoxia arida var. gigantea, which can reach up to 2 meters in height.
