Onopordum illyricum, also known as Illyrian thistle or Illyrian cottonthistle, is a biennial herb native to southwestern Europe. It has been introduced to Australia and California, where it has become a problematic weed. The plant can grow over two meters tall and has spiny leaves with deep toothed lobes. Its inflorescence produces large flower heads lined with spiny, woolly or cobwebby phyllaries and purple flowers. The fruit is a cylindrical achene topped with a white pappus.
