The ray floret produces an achene with a long, slender body and a very long pappus of bristles at one end. The disc floret produces an achene with a shorter body and a shorter pappus.
Holocarpha heermannii, also known as Heermann's tarweed, is a flowering plant in the Asteraceae family that is native to California. It is most commonly found in the central and southern parts of the state, particularly in the Inner Coast Ranges, Sierra Nevada foothills, and Tehachapi Mountains. This annual herb can grow up to 1 meter tall and has a stem covered in glandular hairs. Its leaves are up to 10 centimeters long and the inflorescence consists of clusters of flower heads with yellow disc and ray florets. The achenes produced by these florets differ in shape and are surrounded by a pappus of bristles.
