Helianthus mollis, also known as ashy sunflower, hairy sunflower, or downy sunflower, is a widespread species of sunflower found in the United States and Canada. It primarily grows in the Great Lakes region, but can also be found along the Atlantic Coast. It is a perennial plant that spreads through underground rhizomes and can reach up to 1.5 meters in height. The leaves are egg-shaped with toothed edges and the plant produces 1-15 flower heads with yellow ray and disc florets. The flowers bloom from July to September and the species gets its name from the soft, downy hairs on the plant.
