Encelia farinosa, also known as brittlebush, is a desert shrub commonly found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It can grow up to 30 to 150 centimeters tall and has fragrant leaves. The plant produces bright yellow flowers with orange-yellow ray florets and purple-brown disc florets. The leaves contain a chemical called 3-Acetyl-6-methoxybenzaldehyde. There are two recognized varieties of Encelia farinosa, one with yellow disc florets and one with purple-brown disc florets. The plant has a variety of historical uses, including being used as glue, incense, gum, and even a toothbrush. It has also been used for medicinal purposes by indigenous and pioneer peoples. Encelia farinosa is commonly used in landscaping and can thrive in a variety of habitats, as long as it has a sunny position and well-drained soil.
