Cirsium heterophyllum, commonly known as the melancholy thistle, is a species of flowering plant in the Asteraceae family. Native to Europe and western Asia, it grows in upland meadows, grasslands, road verges, and open woodland. It is an erect spineless herbaceous perennial, growing 45-120 cm tall, with grooved but unwinged stems, green and hairless leaves above, and thick white-felted leaves underneath. The flower heads are 3-5 cm long and wide, with red-purple flowers appearing from July to August. It was historically used as a possible cure for sadness.
