Cheirolophus crassifolius, also known as the Maltese centaury or Widnet il-Baħar, is a flowering plant that is native to Malta. It belongs to the Asteraceae family and is found in cliffs and coastal valleys. This plant has been the national plant of Malta since 1973, but it is now threatened by habitat loss. While it is scarce in the wild, it can be found in cultivated areas such as roundabouts and the Wied Babu region. It was first described in the 1830s by Stefano Zerafa and was initially classified as the only species in the Palaeocyanus genus. However, genetic studies in 2000 led to its reclassification under the Cheirolophus genus. The name Cheirolophus refers to the hand-shaped bract tips of most species in this genus, while crassifolius means thick leaves, which are succulent and spoon-shaped in this species. There is also a rare variety with serrated leaves, found only in Gozo. Due to its national significance, Cheirolophus crassifolius is cultivated and its purple flowers and green stems resemble a rock, earning it the
