Centaurea jacea, also known as brown knapweed or brownray knapweed, is a perennial plant found in Europe in dry meadows and open woodland areas. It can grow up to 80 centimetres tall and blooms from June to September. In Britain and America, it is often found as a hybrid of black knapweed, with its flower heads forming a more open star shape rather than a brush-like tuft. A fertile hybrid, Centaurea ×moncktonii, exists between black knapweed and brown knapweed.
