Baccharis salicina, also known as willow baccharis or Great Plains false willow, is a shrub found in North America. It belongs to the Asteraceae family and can grow up to 4 meters tall. The leaves are thick and oblong in shape, with toothed edges, and can reach up to 7 centimeters in length. This shrub is dioecious, meaning that male and female plants produce different types of flower heads. The female flowers produce fruits called achenes, which have a white pappus that is about 1 centimeter long. Originally named Baccharis salicifolia in 1840, the species was later renamed to Baccharis salicina due to a previous use of the name for South American plants. It is native to the United States, specifically the southern Great Plains region and Southwestern states, as well as northern Mexico. This plant typically grows in open sandy flood plains, particularly in mildly saline areas.
