Baccharis halimifolia is a shrub species native to North America, found in Nova Scotia, the eastern and southern United States, eastern Mexico, the Bahamas, and Cuba. It is also known by various common names such as eastern baccharis, groundsel bush, sea myrtle, and saltbush. This species was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 and no subspecies or varieties are recognized. It is a fall-flowering shrub that can grow up to 12 feet tall and has thick, egg-shaped leaves with coarse teeth. The plant is dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate individuals, and its flowers are borne in numerous small, compact heads. Baccharis halimifolia is commonly found in wetlands and is known for its salt tolerance. It is also a source of nectar for butterflies and provides food and cover for wildlife. However, it has become invasive in Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. The species is also toxic to humans, but has been traditionally used as a medicine in some regions.
