Vanilla madagascariensis is a model wild relative used in molecular phylogenetic studies of the genus Vanilla. The complete chloroplast genome has been sequenced (Li et al., 2020), providing a reference for comparative genomics and helping resolve evolutionary relationships among wild species. The species is also employed as a genetic resource in Vanilla breeding programs to introduce disease resistance and novel flavor traits into cultivated V. planifolia, despite its low vanillin content limiting direct commercial exploitation. Research on floral scent chemistry (Dequach et al., 2019) and reproductive biology (Bory et al., 2008) utilizes this orchid to elucidate scent biosynthesis pathways and pollinator interactions, making it a valuable system for orchid developmental biology.
