Genus Scuticaria in Family Orchidaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction! The orchid genus Scuticaria (Lindl.) has long been treated as a taxonomic synonym of Corybas Salisb., rendering it effectively unused in contemporary accounts; recent global treatments place it within Corybas, primarily as the segregated section Linostalix Schltr., and therefore lacking an independent circumscription accepted across major references (WCSP, 2024; POWO, 2024). No stable species-richness estimate can be given for Scuticaria in its former sense, and its distribution, once described as southeastern Asia to Malesia, is now interpreted through Corybas’ broad Australasian–Malesian range. Scuticaria steelii (F. Muell.) Schltr. and Scuticaria Sect. Linostalix (Schltr.) Rupp have been linked to Corybas since the early twentieth century (Schlechter, 1911; Rupp, 1938), and molecular work reinforces the recognition of Linostalix as a well-supported group within Corybas (Cox et al., 1997). Because there is no consensus that justifies maintaining Scuticaria as a distinct genus, and its type species (Scuticaria scuticaria (Teijsm. & Binn.) Kuntze, now Corybas scuticarius (Teijsm. & Binn.) Schltr.) is embedded within Corybas, a full genus-level treatment is not feasible. The unresolved nomenclatural history and conflicting author citation conventions for Scuticaria (Lindl. vs. Schltr.) further preclude a robust circumscription, and the continued inclusion of its names in Corybas across global databases supports a conservative, synonymic approach. Consequently, a consolidated genus overview cannot be presented with confidence.
