Genus Renanthera in Family Orchidaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Renanthera is a genus of monopodial epiphytic orchids in the family Orchidaceae (subtribe Aeridinae), distributed through mainland Southeast Asia from Myanmar and Thailand to Malaysia and the Philippines, with one species in southern China (Hainan) and a second in New Guinea (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024; Chase et al., 2015). About 16 species are currently accepted, and the type is R. coccinea Lour., a widely cultivated ornamental. Plants are typically tree-dwelling, with thick, velamentous aerial roots and distichous, leathery leaves that are conduplicate and often maculate. The inflorescences are long, axillary or basal racemes bearing numerous flowers; the perianth is usually reddish to orange with distinctive yellow to white calli or keels. The lateral sepals are often deflexed, the dorsal sepal more erect, and the petals are smaller than the sepals. The lip is three-lobed with a prominent, usually thick, and adnate spur; the column is short and massive with an often prominent column foot, and the pollinia are cohering on a small stipe (Dressler, 1993; Seidenfaden, 1992). The fruit is a dry capsule with minute, dust-like seeds typical of the tribe.
Species richness centers on Thailand–Vietnam–Laos with several endemics, and on the Malay Peninsula and the Philippines; one species reaches Hainan and another New Guinea, indicative of Asian mainland–Sundaland–Papuasia links (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). Habitats range from lowland evergreen forest to lower montane cloud forest, often in open, sunny situations on emergent trees and cliff faces up to roughly 1500 m (Seidenfaden, 1992; Christenhusz et al., 2017). Flowering can occur year-round depending on locality and conditions, and pollination is presumed to be primarily ornithophilous where red flowers dominate, though direct observations are limited. A base chromosome number of x = 19 is widely reported for the genus and several close allies (Jones, 1993; Borba et al., 2001).
Recent taxonomic work has gradually stabilized the circumscription: Arachnis and Vandopsis species once allied to Renanthera are now maintained separately, while Acampe remains distinct in its role as pollinia-bearing cap-shaped flowers and a different floral formula. Renanthera storiei and R. imschootiana remain core to Renanthera, whereas R. vietnamensis has been reinstated from synonymy (Christenhusz et al., 2017; Ormerod, 2018). Molecular phylogenetics supports Renanthera within a Vanda–Aerides clade and validates the separation from Ascocentrum and Christensonia (Chase et al., 2015). Alternative treatments, such as segregating a small section of species into Holcoglossum, are minority views not reflected in standard checklists (WFO, 2024; POWO, 2024).
Renanthera species are important ornamentals, especially the colorful R. coccinea and R. storiei, long cultivated in Asia and abroad for vivid, long-lasting sprays (Christenhusz et al., 2017). There is no significant timber or crop use, and the group is not known as invasive. Conservation varies locally: some taxa are threatened by forest loss and collection; basic distribution and ecological data remain incomplete for several narrow endemics (POWO, 2024). Continued field surveys and cultivated-conservation linkage will be key to future assessments.
