Prosthechea cochleata, also known as the clamshell orchid or cockleshell orchid, is a type of epiphytic orchid found in Central America, the West Indies, Colombia, Venezuela, and southern Florida. It is also the national flower of Belize, where it is known as the black orchid. This orchid has oblong discoid pseudobulbs with one or two linear leaves and unique flowers where the labellum forms a "hood" over the column, making it appear upside down. The species usually has one anther, but an endangered variety, P. cochleata var. triandra, has three anthers and is able to self-pollinate. P. cochleata is a popular orchid in cultivation due to its long-lasting flowers and several hybrids have been created, including the well-known Prosthechea Green Hornet.
