This species is known for its unique conical pseudobulbs and dark green leaves with purplish undersides. It was first discovered and described by French botanists in 2001 and is named after Dr. Jean-Pierre Peyrot for his contributions to the study of Malagasy orchids. Oeceoclades peyrotii is only found in four locations in southwestern Madagascar and is similar to other small-flowered species in the Oeceoclades genus, but can be distinguished by its unique characteristics.
