Genus Octarrhena in Family Orchidaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Octarrhena is a small genus in Orchidaceae (tribe Dendrobieae, subtribe Eriinae) comprising about fifty species distributed in Sri Lanka, the Western Ghats, Southeast Asia, the Malesian region, and eastward to the Pacific. The type species is Octarrhena parvula (Thwaites 1861). The genus is diagnosed by erect, slender, one- to few-noded pseudobulbs bearing one terminal, subsessile, leathery to somewhat fleshy leaf, and a terminal inflorescence that appears racemose but is technically a reduced thyrse, usually crowded with small, resupinate flowers; sepals are free or the lateral sepals are basally fused, the labellum is 3-lobed and is usually saccate at the base, and the column is short and bears a reduced foot; the ovary is superior with axile placentation, and the fruit is a dry dehiscent capsule with dustlike seeds. Vegetatively, plants are epiphytic, often on mossy twigs and shaded trunks in evergreen forests from lowland to mid-elevations, with fine, often compact habits that differ from co-occurring Eria and Pinalia.
Centers of diversity occur in Sri Lanka and the Western Ghats, and in the Malesian region, with localized endemics on islands and mountain systems; typical habitats include lowland to hill rainforest, mist forest, and occasionally lower montane zones. Pollination and dispersal are poorly documented, and base chromosome number remains uncertain. Recent molecular work in Eriinae and broader Dendrobieae (Govaerts et al., 2017; Chase et al., 2015; Pridgeon et al., Genera Orchidacearum 5, 2014) supports Octarrhena as monophyletic within a clade that includes Eria and Pinalia, but generic limits in Eriinae are debated, with some treatments (e.g., Turner, 2013) broadening Eria or merging groups into Pinalia. POWO (2024) and the WFO (2024) currently recognize Octarrhena at generic rank, although the precise number of accepted species and their geographic assignments vary among recent floristic treatments.
Human relevance is limited: several narrow endemics are occasionally cultivated in specialist orchid collections, and the delicate, pendent mats can be used in terrarium horticulture. Conservation outlook is constrained by habitat loss and small, patchy distributions; enhanced fieldwork, targeted red-listing, and targeted phylogenetic sampling are needed to resolve species limits, distribution, and threat status.
