Epidendrum calanthum is a type of orchid found in the montane tropical rainforests of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and the West Indies. It has a sympodial growth habit, with stems covered in leaf-bearing sheaths and a terminal peduncle. The plant can grow up to 1 meter tall and produces white to pink flowers in a congested raceme at the end of the stem. Its leaves can reach up to 10 cm in length. The flower has oblong sepals and petals with serrated edges, and a broad, lacerate lip that is trilobate. It is similar to another orchid species, E. imatophyllum, but can be distinguished by its resupinate flowers. The plant has a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 30 and can hybridize with other species. Some previously recognized varieties of E. calanthum are now considered synonyms for other orchid species.
