Drakaea (Orchidaceae: subfamily Orchidoideae) comprises approximately 10 species of terrestrial orchids endemic to southwestern Australia, distributed from coastal heathlands to open forests (Brown et al., 2008; Hopper & Brown, 2007). The type species is D. elastica Lindl., historically abundant but now critically endangered.

Drakaea is distinguished by its unique pollination strategy and morphology. Plants develop a single ovate basal leaf and a slender flowering stem bearing a solitary flower with a highly specialized lip that mimics female wasps. The lip bears a hinged mechanism that triggers male wasp pollination attempts (Hopper & Brown, 2006, 2007). Floral features include three sepals, two petals, and a column structure typical of Orchidaceae, with the lip bearing dense calli and wing-like structures that resemble wasp wings.

Species diversity centers in the Southwest Australian Floristic Region, with multiple narrow endemics restricted to specific soil types and vegetation communities (Brown et al., 2008). D. glyptodon occurs in laterite soils, while D. thynniphila specializes in winter-wet depressions. Most species occupy elevations below 300 meters, though some extend into granite outcrop habitats.

The genus exhibits specialized pollination mutualisms with thynnine wasps (Zaspilothynnus spp.), representing a remarkable example of sexual deception in orchids (Hopper & Brown, 2007). Fruit development produces capsules with minute dust-like seeds lacking endosperm, characteristic of orchid seed morphology. Chromosome numbers remain unconfirmed across the genus.

Recent molecular phylogenetic studies (Drakaea ribosomal DNA; Hopper & Brown, 2007) support monophyly of the genus within Drakaeinae, while morphological analyses (Brown et al., 2008) recognize species boundaries based on lip morphology and wasp specificity. Alternative taxonomic treatments have occasionally merged Drakaea with Glottophyllum, though contemporary treatments maintain its generic distinctness (Hopper & Brown, 2007; POWO, 2024).

The genus holds horticultural significance as an example of pollination biology and has been subject to ex situ conservation efforts for threatened species. D. elastica serves as a flagship species for habitat restoration programs targeting southwestern Australian ecosystems.

Current conservation concerns center on habitat loss, particularly urbanization and altered fire regimes (Brown et al., 2008; Hopper & Brown, 2006). Understanding wasp-pollinator relationships remains crucial for predicting species responses to environmental change, though reproductive ecology of several narrow endemics requires further investigation (WFO, 2024).
