Dipodium variegatum, also known as the slender hyacinth-orchid or blotched hyacinth-orchid, is a unique leafless orchid found in south-eastern Australia. It forms a symbiotic relationship with fungi of the genus Russula and is only visible above ground during its blooming period from December to February. The flowers are cream-colored to light pink with maroon blotches and the plant can grow up to 60 cm tall. It is similar to another species, D. roseum, but can be distinguished by its diverging keels on the labellum and spotted ovaries. This orchid is found in a variety of habitats and is pollinated by native bees and wasps. It is considered rare and is not able to be cultivated due to its reliance on mycorrhizal fungi.
