In Australia, it is found in the states of Queensland and New South Wales.
Dipodium squamatum is a mycoheterotrophic orchid species belonging to the tribe Cymbidieae. It was first described in 1786 by Georg Forster as Ophrys squamata and later transferred to the genus Cymbidium. However, in 1819, James Edward Smith provided the first valid combination for the species in the genus Dipodium. It is commonly confused with Dipodium punctatum, but the latter is an accepted name only in Australia. The earliest scientific collection of this species was attributed to Johann Reinhold Forster, who collected it during James Cook's second expedition to the Pacific. It is found in New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and Australia, with a wide distribution throughout Grande Terre, Isle of Pines, and southern islands of Aneityum and Erromango.
