Dipodium atropurpureum, also known as the purple hyacinth orchid, is a unique orchid that is found only in New South Wales. It is a leafless perennial herb that remains dormant for most of the year, but in summer it produces a tall flowering stem with up to forty dark pinkish purple to reddish purple flowers. The flowers have darker spots and blotches and are pollinated by native bees and wasps. This orchid is commonly found in open forests with sparse low shrubs. Attempts to cultivate this species have been unsuccessful due to its dependence on mycorrhizal fungi. It was first described in 1991 and its specific name, atropurpureum, refers to its dark purple flowers.
