General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Ripe pods of Dendrolirium tomentosum are harvested locally in Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand and consumed as a seasonal fruit. The pericarp is split and the gelatinous seed arils are eaten raw; the surrounding pulp is also eaten fresh. Occasionally the mature pulp is sieved to remove seeds and dried for later use as a flavoring or direct food. No medicinal claims are intended.
Colorants and tanning:
Industrial and craft applications:
The major source of the brown tannins used in modern leather tanning is the fruit galls (known locally as “ tempinis tempinis ”) induced by the mothCrocidophora attenualis; these galls are harvested, sun‑dried, ground to powder, and used to produce a high‑tannin extract. The powdered gall is also used as a brown dye mordanted with iron salts for protein fibers such as silk and wool, yielding deep browns.
Properties relevant to use:
The fruit galls are characterized by a high hydrolysable tannin content (hydrolyzable tannins) and low acidity, enabling efficient extraction and consistent leather pH conditions. Upon hydrolysis, the galls release gallic acid and ellagic acid components that complex with collagen, resulting in fast and well‑fixed brown shades on protein fibers.
