Dactylorhiza fuchsii, also known as the common spotted orchid, is a widespread and abundant species of flowering plant in the orchid family. It is found throughout much of Europe, as well as in parts of Asia and North America. This herbaceous perennial can range from 10 to 60 centimeters in height and produces a dense-flowered spike with white to pale purple flowers that have a symmetrical pattern of dark purple spots. The species is highly variable and can easily hybridize with other orchid species, resulting in a multitude of forms. It is commonly found in a variety of habitats, including forests, meadows, and wetlands. Dactylorhiza fuchsii is an important food source for pollinators such as bumblebees and longhorn beetles, and forms mycorrhizal associations with certain fungi. It is named after the 16th-century German botanist Leonhart Fuchs and has several subspecies and hybrid varieties.
