Coryanthes speciosa, also known as the bat orchid, is a type of orchid that can be found in various countries including Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. This unique orchid has a special mechanism for attracting pollinators, such as bees, to its flowers. The orchid has a "bucket" structure that collects liquid from above, which is then used to attract bees with its sweet drops. As the bees jostle for position, some may accidentally fall into the bucket. However, the orchid has a spout that regulates the fluid levels and allows the bees to escape. As the bees travel through the spout, they come into contact with the plant's anthers, which produce pollen that sticks to the bees. At the end of the spout, the bees must cross the stigma of the plant, ensuring pollination. This process also increases the chances of cross pollination with other nearby plants. Overall, Coryanthes speciosa has a unique and effective method of ensuring pollination and reproduction.
