Corallorhiza mertensiana, also known as Pacific coralroot or Western coralroot, is a leafless, parasitic orchid found in the shady conifer forests of northwestern North America. It was previously considered a subspecies but was given species rank in 1997. The plant has a red to brownish purple stem and pink to reddish pink flowers with yellow to dark red veins. It is a nonphotosynthetic myco-heterotroph, receiving its nutrition from fungi that in turn receive nutrients from trees. It only associates with certain species of fungi and is found in damp, shady areas with rich soil. It can be found in the Cascades and Rocky Mountains, and has been observed growing with other plants such as Alnus tenuifolia and Gaultheria shallon.
