Suggest a correction!Chloraea (Lindl.) is a terrestrial genus in Orchidaceae (subfamily Orchidoideae; tribe Chloraeeae), comprising approximately 50–80 species depending on treatment (Chiapella, 2010; Chase et al., 2015; GBIF, 2024; POWO, 2024). It is widely distributed in temperate South America, especially Chile and western to central Argentina, with outliers toward southern Brazil and the Falkland Islands, occupying a variety of open habitats from sea level to alpine elevations. The type species is C. virescens (Willd.) Lindl. (Schinini, 2008; Chase et al., 2015). Plants are rhizomatous or tuberous perennials with usually single, basal, lanceolate to ovate leaves forming a rosette; cauline leaves are fewer and sheathing. The inflorescence is a raceme, typically one to several flowered. Flowers are generally resupinate in Chloraea (as restricted here), with sepals and petals spreading or incurved and a labellum that is usually broader and often trilobed or undulate, bearing central keels or calli; the column is stout with a lateral anther and a terminal rostellum; the ovary is inferior with axile placentation. The fruit is a capsule with minute, dust-like seeds (Chiapella, 2010; Chase et al., 2015).
Diversity is centered in Chile and adjacent Argentina; many species are local endemics, with several restricted to high-elevation grasslands and sclerophyllous scrub (Chiapella, 2010). Reproductive biology remains incompletely resolved, but the floral morphology is consistent with insect pollination; specific pollinators have been identified only for a few taxa, and seed dispersal is passive by wind (Chiapella, 2010). The base chromosome number is x = 21, as documented in Chilean and Argentine taxa (Chiapella, 2010).
Taxonomically, Chloraea has been treated broadly to include Gavilea and other segregates, but current molecular and morphological evidence supports a narrower circumscription, with Gavilea treated as separate (Chiapella, 2010; Chase et al., 2015; van den Berg et al., 2015). Within Chloraea, sectional or subgeneric groupings are variably applied and lack robust phylogenetic backbone resolution; species delimitation remains fluid across its range (Chiapella, 2010; Chase et al., 2015; van den Berg et al., 2015). Human relevance is primarily horticultural; several Chilean species are cultivated as ornamental terrestrials, while others are of local conservation concern due to habitat loss and overcollection (Schinini, 2008; Chiapella, 2010). Conservation status assessments remain uneven, and basic life history and demography data are lacking for most species (Chiapella, 2010; Chase et al., 2015).
