Cattleya (Lindl.) is a genus of sympodial epiphytic orchids in the family Orchidaceae. About 120 species are currently recognized, though the number fluctuates as taxonomic revisions are refined (POWO, 2024). The genus ranges from Costa Rica through the Guianas and the northern Andes to southeastern Brazil, with the greatest concentration of species in the Atlantic forest and adjacent mountainous areas. C. labiata (Lindl.) is the type species of the genus.

Morphologically Cattleya is distinguished by stout pseudobulbs that serve as water‑storage organs, each bearing one to several thick, leathery leaves. Flowering occurs on a terminal raceme that emerges from the apex of the pseudobulb; the inflorescence produces one to several large, fragrant flowers. The perianth consists of three sepals and three petals, the dorsal sepal often narrower than the lateral pair, and a prominent, often frilled labellum (lip) that varies widely in shape and coloration. The column is short and bears two pollinia; the ovary is inferior and typically partitioned into three locules with axile placentation (Dressler, 1993). The fruit is a dehiscent capsule releasing copious, dust‑like seeds that lack endosperm.

The center of diversity lies in southeastern Brazil, where many species are endemic to humid lowland and montane forest, with elevations up to roughly 1 500 m (WFO, 2024). Additional centers of richness occur in the Colombian and Venezuelan Andes, and a few taxa extend into Central America. Most species occupy shaded, well‑drained habitats on trunks or branches of tall trees, and several are obligate epiphytes of cloud forest canopies.

Pollination is mainly mediated by male euglossine bees attracted to the complex floral fragrances; the bees collect scent compounds while contacting the column and pollinia. Seed dispersal is anemochorous, facilitated by the minute, winged seeds. Chromosome numbers are consistently 2n = 40, indicating a base number of x = 20 (Senghas, 1983).

Recent phylogenetic work has reshaped the generic limits. Molecular analyses place the former genus Sophronitis firmly within Cattleya as a subgeneric clade (Chase et al., 2008). Moreover, many species once placed in Laelia have been transferred to Cattleya, a treatment reflected in the World Flora Online (2024); however, some specialists retain Laelia as a separate genus (Pridgeon et al., 2014), illustrating ongoing taxonomic uncertainty.

The genus is of major horticultural importance: its large, showy flowers make Cattleya the classic “corsage orchid” cultivated worldwide for cut‑flower markets and private collections. Extensive hybrid breeding has produced thousands of cultivars, but the plants are not used for timber, food, or medicinal purposes.

Conservation concerns are acute; most taxa are listed on CITES Appendix II and many are threatened by habitat loss, illegal collection, and climate change. Ex situ cultivation provides a reservoir for future re‑introduction, yet detailed demographic studies and expanded protection of native habitats remain critical for long‑term persistence.
