Calochilus holtzei, also known as the ghostly beard orchid, is a unique species of orchid found only in northwestern Australia. It has a single leaf and can produce up to twenty pale green to yellowish flowers with red markings. The labellum, or lip, of the flower has a distinctive greenish "beard" made of bristly white hairs. This orchid is a perennial plant with an underground tuber and blooms from December to March. It was first described in 1892 by Ferdinand von Mueller and is named after the collector of the type specimen, Maurice William Holtze. The ghostly beard orchid can be found in forest and woodland areas in the northern Kimberley region of Western Australia and on Melville Island in the Northern Territory.
