Calochilus caeruleus, also known as the wiry beard orchid, is a type of orchid found in northern Australia and New Guinea. It has a single leaf that continues to grow during flowering and can have up to twelve greenish flowers with reddish brown markings. The labellum, or lip, of the flower has a distinctive red "beard". This perennial herb grows from an underground tuber and can reach up to 800mm in height. It blooms from December to January, but each flower only lasts for a short time. This orchid was first described in 1946 and its name, caeruleus, means "sky blue" in Latin. It can be found in a variety of habitats, including swamps, wet forests, and woodlands, in New Guinea, the Northern Territory, and Tropical North Queensland.
