Tigridia pavonia, also known as jockey's cap lily, Mexican shellflower, and tiger flower, is a flowering plant in the iris family. It is native to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, and has been naturalized in Ecuador and Peru. This summer-flowering perennial has narrow, lance-shaped leaves and produces three-petalled blooms in a variety of colors with striking central markings. The flowers open in the morning and close at dusk, with blooms appearing throughout the summer. Tigridia pavonia is often grown as an ornamental plant and prefers a sheltered, sunny location with sandy but fertile soil. It is not very cold hardy and should be lifted and stored in colder areas. The roasted bulbs of this plant are edible and have a chestnut-like flavor, and have been used by indigenous peoples in Mexico and the Americas. However, this plant may also attract aphids, specifically the Aphis newtoni species.
