Moraea aristata, also known as blue-eyed uintjie or Blouooguintjie, is a critically endangered species of flowering plant in the Iridaceae family. It is endemic to Cape Town and can now only be found in the grounds of the Observatory in the suburb of Observatory. This winter-flowering bulb produces large and beautiful white flowers with iridescent blue spots at the base of each petal. Its natural habitat, the Peninsula Shale Renosterveld vegetation, has been greatly reduced due to urbanization, making this plant critically endangered. Its natural pollinators, the Monkey beetles, are also declining in the city. However, there is hope for its survival as it has been successfully reintroduced to the Rondebosch Common in 2017 and 2018. Despite its rarity in the wild, it is easy to grow in gardens with sandy or clay soils.
