It is best to keep the corms dry during the dormant period.
Gladiolus watsonioides is a medium to high herbaceous plant with sword-shaped leaves and red funnel-shaped flowers. It belongs to the iris family and is commonly known as Mackinder's gladiolus. It is native to the highlands of central Kenya and northern Tanzania, including Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro. The plant has a flattened fleshy corm at its base and typically carries five to seven leaves. The flowers are scarlet red with some yellow on the inside and can be seen from August to November. It was first described in 1885 and has undergone several taxonomic changes. It is now considered synonymous with other species in the Gladiolus genus. Mackinder's gladiolus can be found in mountain slopes above the forest zone and can be cultivated in a frost-free greenhouse.
