Crocus nudiflorus is a dwarf, deciduous perennial plant that belongs to the genus Crocus in the Iridaceae family. It is native to western Europe, specifically southwestern France and Spain, and has been cultivated in Great Britain since Tudor times. This autumn-flowering plant produces goblet-shaped or bell-shaped flowers in shades of deep purple to lilac-purple with a paler throat and bright orange or yellow stigma. Its basal leaves, with a silvery central stripe, appear in winter and spring following the autumn flowers. The plant's Latin name, nudiflorus, means 'naked flower' and refers to the flower emerging before the leaves. It is often found on roadsides, meadows, and pastures, and is sometimes eaten by wild boars. In addition to its ornamental value, Crocus nudiflorus has been used in folk medicine as an anti-spasmodic, abortive, and sedative. It was also voted as the county flower of Nottinghamshire in 2002.
