Xanthorrhoea australis, also known as the grass tree or blackboy, is a common plant found in Australia. It is easily identified by its rough diamond-shaped leaves and bluish-green color. The plant has a rough trunk that can grow up to 3 meters tall and may be branched. It is slow-growing and only starts to develop a trunk after many years. X. australis is known for its unique flowering pattern, with flowers appearing on a tall spike after a bushfire. The plant is also long-lived, with some estimated to be over 350 years old. Indigenous Australians used various parts of the plant for food and tools, and its resin was used for making lacquer and explosives. X. australis is found in several Australian states and is highly susceptible to a soil-borne disease. It was first described by botanist Robert Brown in 1810.
