Phormium colensoi, also known as mountain flax or wharariki in Māori, is a perennial plant native to New Zealand. It has greenish, yellow or orange flowers and twisted seed pods. It is less common than other Phormium species and has two distinct geographic forms. The taxonomy of this species has been debated, but it is now generally accepted as the correct name. It is a sacred plant to the Māori people and has been used for various traditional purposes. There are numerous cultivars of this plant, some of which have gained recognition for their unique characteristics. However, P. colensoi cultivars are considered less hardy than other Phormium cultivars.
