Kniphofia umbrina, also known as the Eswati poker, is a flowering plant native to an area near Forbes Reef in Eswatini. It is a herbaceous perennial that can grow up to 1.8 meters tall and has brown, scented flowers that form a raceme. This species is similar to Kniphofia typhoides and is typically found in rocky grasslands with acidic, clay-rich soil. It covers approximately 40 square kilometers and is found on Swazi Nation Land and the Hawane Nature Reserve. Due to threats such as agriculture and road construction, the species was listed as vulnerable by the IUCN in 1978. Conservation efforts, including translocating individuals and collecting seeds, were implemented, but the population still declined by 92% between 1978 and 1985. As a result, the species was reassessed as critically endangered in 2001.
