Scilla bifolia, also known as alpine squill or two-leaf squill, is a perennial plant that grows from an underground bulb. It belongs to the genus Scilla and is part of the Asparagaceae family. The plant has two or rarely three lance-shaped leaves that clasp up to half of the stem. Its flowering stems are erect and unbranched, reaching a height of 10-20 cm. The flowers are upward-facing and bloom from early to late spring. They are deep violet-blue in color, but can also be white, pink, or purple. The plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. There are several subspecies and cultivars of Scilla bifolia, with the 'Rosea' variety having pale pink or white flowers. The plant is native to Europe and western Russia, and can be found in shady places, woods, and mountain grasslands at altitudes of 100-2,000 m.
