Ophiopogon planiscapus is a small evergreen perennial plant with grasslike leaves and purple or white flowers. It is native to Japan and is commonly used as a groundcover or underplanting for larger shrubs. The cultivar 'Kokuryu' has dark purple leaves and is known as 'Black Dragon' or 'Nigra'. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. There are also variegated forms called 'Little Tabby' and 'Silver Ribbon'. The plants can be propagated by dividing the colonies in the spring.
