Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Dichelostemma Kunth is a genus of cormous perennials in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Brodiaeoideae (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). About seven species are currently accepted, distributed from the Pacific coast of California through the Sierra Nevada and adjacent parts of Oregon, Nevada and Baja California. The type species, D. congestum (Kunth) Sprague, was designated by early taxonomic treatments.
Morphologically the genus is distinguished by erect, linear to lanceolate basal leaves that are glabrous, sometimes glaucous, and lack conspicuous stipules. Inflorescences are terminal umbels or short racemes bearing actinomorphic, six‑tepaled flowers; the tepals are fused at the base into a short tube and may be white, pink or purple. Six stamens are inserted near the base of the tube, and the superior ovary comprises three locules with axile placentation. Fruit is a membranous capsule containing flattened, winged seeds.
Species richness is highest in the Coast Ranges and Sierra Nevada foothills of California, with several narrowly endemic taxa occurring in the intermountain West and on serpentine soils. Most species inhabit dry, well‑drained grasslands, chaparral or open oak woodlands from sea level to roughly 2 000 m elevation.
Pollination is primarily by solitary bees and small moths; field observations indicate frequent bee visitation. Seeds are dispersed by wind or gravity without specialized fruit adaptations. Chromosome counts consistently show a base number x = 9, with diploid complements of 2n = 18 recorded for the majority of taxa (Goldblatt & Johnson, 2000).
Molecular studies place Dichelostemma as sister to the core Brodiaea clade (Chase et al., 2009). The genus is sometimes retained as a separate entity in current checklists, but some authors treat it as a section within a broader Brodiaea (McNeill, 2013). Historical sectional divisions into D. subg. Dichelostemma and D. subg. Stenolobium have not yet been robustly supported by phylogenomic data.
Several species are cultivated as ornamental spring bulbs, notably D. congestum and D. capitatum, valued in native‑plant horticulture. No species are used for timber or as crops, and none are considered invasive.
Habitat loss from urban development, invasive grasses and altered fire regimes constitute the main conservation threats. Continued monitoring of population genetics and climate‑vulnerability modelling is essential to anticipate future impacts.
