Genus Bellevalia in Family Asparagaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Bellevalia (Lapeyr.) in the Asparagaceae subfamily Scilloideae is a Mediterranean–West Asian bulbous genus of about 55 species (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). Its core distribution spans Iberia and North Africa to Turkey, the Levant and Iran, with centers of diversity in Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean (Friesen and Fritsch, 2001). The type species is B. romana (Lapeyr.). Diagnostic traits separating Bellevalia from related scilloid genera include usually campanulate to narrowly tubular flowers that are not constricted at the throat, with six spreading lobes and a prominent campanulate base; a superior to partially inferior ovary; and narrowly winged or ridged seeds (Friesen and Fritsch, 2001; Speta, 1998; SOS, 2017). Plants form a basal rosette of lanceolate leaves that are glabrous to slightly scabrid; the inflorescence is a raceme with persistent, usually brown, scarious bracts; the capsule dehisces loculicidally.
Diversity and range: Bellevalia is richest in Turkey and the Aegean, with multiple narrow endemics to Anatolia and adjacent regions (Friesen and Fritsch, 2001). Species occupy dry grasslands, shrubland, open woodland edges and rocky slopes from lowland to alpine elevations. Disjunct occurrences occur from Morocco to Iran and the Caucasus, reflecting Pliocene–Pleistocene diversification and migration along Mediterranean and Irano–Turanian corridors (Friesen and Fritsch, 2001).
Intrinsic biology: The showy flowers attract bees and syrphid flies; seed dispersal appears largely passive, with reported occasional ant dispersal (Speta, 1998; SOS, 2017). Base chromosome numbers are established as x=4 for many Bellevalia taxa (Friesen and Fritsch, 2001).
Taxonomy and phylogeny: Molecular analyses strongly support Bellevalia as monophyletic and sister to a Muscari–Hyacinthoides–Scilla clade (Friesen and Fritsch, 2001). Within Bellevalia, several informal groups are recognized in regional treatments, but the subgeneric framework has not been stabilized (Speta, 1998; SOS, 2017). Some authors segregate taxa with elongate, non-appendaged filaments into Fornicium; this circumscription is not widely adopted and is treated as a synonym under Bellevalia in the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families (POWO, 2024). Conversely, taxa formerly included as Bellevalia sect. Ramosae and allied elements are now accepted in Pseudomuscari by several modern works (Friesen and Fritsch, 2001; SOS, 2017). Conflicting accounts of species limits and synonymy remain, especially among Aegean–Anatolian endemics (Friesen and Fritsch, 2001; SOS, 2017).
Human relevance: A few species are cultivated as rock‑garden or bulbous ornamentals, with B. romana the most familiar in horticulture; several taxa are rare in cultivation and dependent on wild collections (SOS, 2017).
Conservation and outlook: Localized endemics are threatened by over-collection, habitat loss and grazing; targeted IUCN assessments and revised taxonomy are priorities to guide conservation planning.
