Narcissus tortifolius, also known as "varica de San José" in Spanish, is a type of Narcissus plant that is native to the Province of Almeria and the Campo de Cartagena in the Region of Murcia. This plant is well adapted to the arid conditions of southeastern Spain and can be found in esparto grasslands and thyme fields. It blooms between February and March, sprouting from a bulb in December. It was first described in Sorbas in 1977 and has since been found in other areas of Almeria and Cartagena. The name "Narcissus" comes from Greek mythology, referring to the young narcissist known for his beauty. "Tortifolius" means "twisted-leaved" in Latin, describing the twisting of its leaves. This plant is protected as a Site of Community Importance and has a chromosome number of n=5 2n=10. 2n=20,21,30,31. 2n=22.
