Hippeastrum leopoldii is a perennial herbaceous plant that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is found in Peru and Bolivia. It was first described by Thomas Moore in 1870 and was named after King Leopold II of Belgium, who visited the Royal Horticultural Society exhibition in South Kensington that year. This plant has been used in breeding programs for Hippeastrum, resulting in popular hybrids such as 'John Heal'.
