Sommieria is a unique genus of flowering plant that is native to New Guinea, specifically Papua New Guinea and West Papua in Indonesia. It is the only species in this genus, called Sommieria leucophylla, and is found in the understory of rainforests. It is closely related to Asterogyne palms and other Heterospathe plants with short stems and sparse inflorescences. The genus is named after European botanist Stephen Sommier. The plant has a solitary trunk and a full crown of leaves with tomentose sheaths that disintegrate into fibers at the base. Its inflorescence is erect and interfoliar, with a long and slender peduncle and few rachillae. The staminate flowers have three distinct sepals and petals, while the pistillate flowers have larger sepals and petals, along with staminodes and a gynoecium covered in brown scales. The fruit is small and round, with a red epicarp that exposes a brown, warty mesocarp as it ages. Sommieria is found in dense rainforests with high humidity and regular rainfall, and is not commonly cultivated or used for any known purposes
