Sabal is a genus of fan palms (Arecaceae) comprising approximately sixteen species (Zona, 1990; Henderson et al., 1995). It is distributed from the southeastern United States and the Caribbean through Mexico and Central America to northern South America, inhabiting coastal swamps, pine woods, limestone soils, and human-modified landscapes. The type species is Sabal mexicana (Zona, 1990).

The plants are typically solitary, occasionally clustering, with cylindrical trunks that may be enlarged at the base. Leaves are large and costapalmate, with a conspicuous hastula on the adaxial blade base; the petioles lack spines and the crownshaft is absent. Inflorescences are interfoliar, usually long, arching or pendulous, bearing numerous triads of unisexual flowers; the perianth is usually six-tepaled. Carpels are triovulate and fruits are globose to oblong-ellipsoid with a thin, smooth endocarp and a single seed bearing ruminate endosperm. The distinctive leaf architecture and hastula readily distinguish Sabal from most other Neotropical fan palms.

Diversity is centered in the Caribbean and the Gulf–Caribbean transition, with several island endemics. The mainland radiation spans Mexico and Central America, and one species (S. minor) extends into the southeastern United States. Typical habitats range from near sea level to mid-elevations in seasonal dry to swampy settings. Biogeographically, the genus reflects vicariance linked to island isolation and coastline dynamics.

Chromosome counts of 2n = 36 (base number x = 18) have been reported, indicating a paleopolyploid history relative to many other Arecaceae. Pollination and seed dispersal are not comprehensively documented for the genus, although insects likely play a role in pollination and frugivores in seed movement; S. palmetto is known to be pollinated by insects (Zona, 1990; Zona & Henderson, 1989).

Taxonomically, Zona (1990) recircumscribed Sabal, reducing the number of recognized species and clarifying relationships among former segregates. Modern treatments recognize subgeneric groupings (e.g., sections Sabal and Uracanthus), although their formal status varies; phylogenetic support has been limited (Zona, 1990; Zona et al., 2011). Alternate taxonomic interpretations persist: many treatments merge S. mexicana with S. palmetto (e.g., Smith et al., 2019), while others treat them as distinct (Zona, 1990; WFO, 2024).

Humans cultivate S. palmetto widely as a landscape palm, particularly in the southeastern United States; S. mexicana and several island species are also horticulturally valuable. Fruits have limited local uses as animal feed, but the genus is not a major timber or crop resource, and Sabal is not noted as invasive.

Conservation is uneven across the range: localized habitat loss affects island and coastal taxa, while several species remain common. Reliable, up-to-date IUCN assessments are lacking for many species, representing a key research gap (POWO, 2024; GBIF, 2024). Long-term stability will depend on integrating refined taxonomy with regional conservation planning.
