Raphia farinifera is a tropical African palm tree that can be found in various locations, including lowland riparian and swamp forests, human habitations, and cultivated areas. It is also naturalized in Madagascar. The tree has long fronds and a tall trunk, and its inflorescences can reach up to 3 meters in length. The tree is monocarpic, meaning it only flowers and fruits once before dying. Raphia farinifera has many uses, including providing materials for thatching, plaiting, and construction, as well as producing raffia fibers, which are used in various products such as hats, baskets, and textiles. The tree also has medicinal properties, with different parts being used to treat toothaches, digestive disorders, and dysentery. Raffia fibers are known for their strength and flexibility, making them useful in horticulture and handicrafts. The tree's seed oil contains important fatty acids and sterols, and its stem bark has been found to be toxic to microfilariae, the cause of river blindness.
