Mauritia flexuosa, also known as the moriche palm, is a tall palm tree found in tropical South America. It grows in wet areas and can reach up to 35 meters in height. The tree produces large leaves and yellow flowers, and its fruit is a chestnut color with a hard nut inside. The fruit is edible and used to make various products such as juice, jam, and ice cream. The tree is also important for its oil, which is high in nutrients and used as ink. Many animal species, including birds, tapirs, and monkeys, rely on the moriche palm for food and shelter. The tree was famously described as a "tree of life" by Alexander von Humboldt, and it is considered a keystone species in its ecosystem. In Brazil, the government building in the capital city is named after the tree, and a moriche palm tree stands in a nearby square.
