Licuala spinosa, also known as the Mangrove fan palm, is a palm species native to Southeast Asia. It can grow up to 7 meters tall and has a trunk of 4-7cm. This plant prefers full sun and requires a lot of water, making it more cold hardy than other Licuala species. In Cambodia, it is known as pha'aw and its leaves are used to make hats and wrap food. The heart and terminal bud of the plant are also used as a vegetable and have medicinal properties in traditional Cambodian medicine. The root is used as a febrifuge and for the health of the foetus, while the bark of the trunk is used to treat tuberculosis.
