Howea forsteriana, also known as the Kentia palm, is a slow-growing flowering plant native to Lord Howe Island in Australia. It can reach heights of up to 10 meters and has long fronds that can grow up to 3 meters. The plant is named after the naturalists Johann Reinhold Forster and Georg Forster, who accompanied Captain Cook on his second voyage to the Pacific. It is considered vulnerable by the World Conservation Union and is tightly regulated for export as an ornamental plant. The Kentia palm gained popularity during the Victorian era and was favored by Queen Victoria. It is still commonly used as a houseplant and in interior design, as it can tolerate low light and cool temperatures. Kentia palms are also grown in outdoor gardens in regions with tropical or mild climates. They are slow-growing and often sold in clusters of 2-5 plants. Care for Kentia palms includes providing bright, indirect light, regular watering, and misting the fronds to maintain humidity.
