Coccothrinax crinita, also known as guano barbudo, guano petate, old man palm, or palma petate, is a single-stemmed palm tree that is endemic to Cuba. It belongs to the Coccothrinax genus and has fan-shaped palmate leaves. The tree can grow up to 10 meters tall and has a trunk covered in thatch or wool-like fibers. It produces small, yellow flowers that are not very showy, but the drooping clusters of flowers can create a beautiful display. The tree also produces fleshy fruits in the summer. There are two recognized subspecies of Coccothrinax crinita, one of which has shorter and less dense fibers on its trunk. This tree typically grows in seasonally flooded savannas and prefers moist, well-drained soils. It is often planted as an ornamental palm and its leaves are used for thatch. However, due to its many uses, the tree is now critically endangered with only 60-130 trees remaining on the island of Cuba.
