Ammandra is a unique genus of flowering plant in the palm family, with only one known species, Ammandra decasperma. This plant is found in Colombia and Ecuador, where it is considered endangered. It is also known as the ivory palm or cabecita. The plant has pinnate leaves and is dioecious, with male and female plants having different inflorescences. The fruit of the plant is covered in pointed warts and contains six or more kidney-shaped seeds. Taxonomists have debated the classification of this plant, with some proposing a second species, but it is now generally accepted that there is only one species of Ammandra. These palms grow in the foothills of the Andes mountains and are commonly used for basket and button making in Colombia. They require wet and warm conditions and cannot tolerate full sun when young.
